Pakistan Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that India has violated Article 51 of the U.N. Charter.

Pakistan Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday (May 7, 2025) said that India has violated Article 51 of the U.N. Charter in response to India’s Operation Sindoor. In a statement posted on X, Mr. Dar stated, “Pakistan reserves the right to respond appropriately at a time and place of its choosing, in accordance with the Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, and as enshrined in international law.”

The military strikes were conducted under Operation Sindoor two weeks after the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. “These actions were measured, non-escalatory, proportionate and responsible. It focussed on dismantling the terrorist infrastructure and disabling terrorists likely to be sent across to India,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.

What is Article 51 of the U.N. Charter?

Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, adopted in 1945, says nothing impairs the right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations. It focuses on the right of self-defence for member states. Any actions executed under Article 51 are required to be promptly communicated to the Security Council.

U.N. Charter’s Article 51 states “Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security. Measures taken by Members in the exercise of this right of self-defence shall be immediately reported to the Security Council and shall not in any way affect the authority and responsibility of the Security Council under the present Charter to take at any time such action as it deems necessary in order to maintain or restore international peace and security.”
