During his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), U.S. President Donald Trump was greeted with a traditional Al-Ayyala performance at the presidential palace, Qasr Al Watan. He was received by UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Mr. Trump was greeted by performers in customary attire, with women rhythmically flipping their hair and men moving in synchronised rows to the beat of drums.

This cultural display featured women in white gowns rhythmically flipping their long hair in unison, accompanied by drumbeats, chants, and men wielding sword-like props, simulating a battle scene. The visit, part of a broader regional tour, underscored the UAE’s emphasis on showcasing its heritage as a pillar of diplomacy and national identity.

What is Al-Ayyala and why is it significant?

Al-Ayyala is a traditional performing art practiced in the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Recognized by UNESCO in 2014 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Al-Ayyala involves chanted poetry, drum music, and dance, simulating a battle scene. Two rows of about 20 men face each other, carrying thin bamboo sticks to signify spears or swords. Musicians play large and small drums, tambourines, and brass cymbals between the rows. In the UAE, girls wearing traditional dresses stand at the front, tossing their long hair from side to side.

When is Al-Ayyala performed?

Al-Ayyala is traditionally performed during weddings, national holidays, and other festive occasions in Oman and the UAE. It serves as a symbol of national identity and unity, bringing together performers from diverse backgrounds and age groups. The lead performer, usually in an inherited role, is responsible for training other performers and ensuring the transmission of this cultural heritage to future generations.

Why is Donald Trump in the UAE? 

President Trump’s visit to the UAE was part of his Middle East tour, which included stops in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The United States and Saudi Arabia signed a defence agreement worth nearly $142 billion. The agreement was part of a broader commitment by Saudi Arabia to invest $600 billion in the US. The two countries have also agreed to strengthen their cooperation on artificial intelligence.
