US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent ने India को लेकर एक soft signal दिया है। उन्होंने कहा कि India पर लगाया गया 25% tariff, जो Russian oil imports बढ़ने के चलते लगाया गया था, future में हटाया जा सकता है। Bessent के मुताबिक tariff अभी active है, लेकिन India ने Russian crude का import काफ़ी हद तक कम कर दिया है। Trump administration ने यह tariff Ukraine war के बाद India को सस्ता Russian oil खरीदने से रोकने के लिए लगाया था। Bessent का दावा है कि इसके बाद Indian refineries की Russian oil buying लगभग collapse हो गई और policy अपने goal में सफल रही। War से पहले India के oil imports में Russia की हिस्सेदारी सिर्फ 2–3% थी, जो discounts के कारण high teens तक पहुंची। US pressure के बाद India ने Middle East, Africa और Latin America से sourcing बढ़ाई। उन्होंने Europe की hypocrisy का भी जिक्र किया, जो Russia के खिलाफ बोलता है लेकिन refined fuel खरीदता है।
