The Supreme Court on Friday (September 19, 2025) has directed the All India Football Federation to hold a general body meeting within four weeks to adopt the new constitution. The court approved the draft constitution with some modifications.

The court also recognised the election of the current office bearers headed by Kalyan Chaubey and said fresh elections were not required. It said the current executive committee could complete its tenure until the polls scheduled for 2026.

The AIFF constitution case has been in the apex court since 2017, when the SC directed the formulation of a new constitution, one that was submitted by former Justice (Retd.) L. Nageswara Rao in 2023. But a final decision on the constitution has been pending since.

FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have written to AIFF, threatening a potential suspension if its constitution is not formally ratified by October 30.

The Supreme Court on September 1, 2025, had directed the AIFF to take all necessary measures to ensure the timely commencement of the 2025–26 football season, including the Super Cup and other competitions under its control, marking a major breakthrough in Indian football’s governance deadlock.

FSDL, which has managed the ISL under the Master Rights Agreement of December 2010, agreed to waive its contractual right of first negotiation and right to match under the Master Rights Agreement of December 8, 2010, through a consensual resolution with AIFF. This agreement allowed AIFF to proceed with the open tender.
