Chennaiyin FC has had defensive lapses throughout this Indian Super League season.
However, a fresh-look backline’s resolute show helped it hold league leader Mohun Bagan Super Giant to a 0-0 draw at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.
New-recruit Pritam Kotal’s entry straight into the starting line-up and skipper Ryan Edwards’ return from illness clicked for the host as Bagan dropped points for the second straight match.
The first 45 minutes saw both teams employing contrasting methods to bulge the net but to no avail.
While Bagan resorted to short passes and possession-based buildup, Chennaiyin’s mantra was finding Wilmar Jordan Gil from a cross or a long ball. Even though there were some shots fired at both ends, the scoreline remained intact.
The narrative continued after the break.

Apart from Dimitrios Petratos hitting the side netting off a free-kick and Edwards’ header going wide later in the match, the offensive side of play was dull in the second period.
CFC had to change its defenders as D. Vignesh (60th minute) and Elsinho (85th) had to be substituted due to injuries.
However, Chennaiyin, sans coach Owen Coyle, stood strong to secure a point.
The result: Chennaiyin FC 0 drew with Mohun Bagan Super Giant 0.
