Iran’s Foreign Minister called on Thursday (October 30, 2025) U.S. plans to resume nuclear testing “regressive and irresponsible”, after a surprise directive by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“A nuclear-armed bully is resuming testing of atomic weapons. The same bully has been demonizing Iran’s peaceful nuclear program,” Abbas Araghchi said in a post on social media.

“The (U.S.) announcement of a resumption of nuclear tests is a regressive and irresponsible move and a serious threat to international peace and security,” he added.

The move comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday (October 29, 2025) that Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, in defiance of Washington’s warnings.

President Donald Trump said Thursday (October 30, 2025) he had ordered the Pentagon to start nuclear weapons testing on a level with China and Russia — just minutes before opening a high-stakes summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

“Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis,” Mr. Trump wrote in a Truth Social post that specifically referenced Russia and China.

Mr. Trump also noted the United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country, praising his own efforts to do “a complete update and renovation of existing weapons.”
