EV sales surge 25% to 24.52 lakh units in FY26 Business News & Hub

In 2025-26 (FY26), total Electric Vehicle (EV) retail sales across Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, Passenger Vehicles, and Commercial Vehicles stood at approximately 24.52 lakh units, growing nearly 24.6% YoY — with every category delivering strong double-digit growth, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) on Tuesday.

Electric Passenger Vehicles retail sales surged 83.63% YoY to touch 1,99,923 units while Electric Commercial Vehicles more than doubled to 19 454 units up 120.57% to 19,454 units, with segment share nearly doubling.

In passenger vehicles, market leader Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. clocked retail sales of 78,811 units, up 36% YoY, JSW MG Motor Ltd. became the second-largest player in this segment by retailing 53,089 units, up 74% while Mahindra & Mahindra retailed 42,721 units, up 407% YoY.

Hyundai Motor India and BYD India retailed 5,885 and 5,361 units growing 138% and 54% respectively. 

KIA India and BMW India registered 794% and 124% YoY growth respectively by retailing 3,738 and 3,537 units during the year.

While Vinfast at 2,390 units and Maruti Suzuki at 1,426 units opened their account during the year the car companies which reported de growth included Mercedes-Benz India, down 10%, Stellantis Automobiles down 71% and Volvo down 5%.

Tesla debuted during the year by registering retail sales of 342 units. 

Other players putting together sold 628 units growing 77% YoY as per data released by FADA.

In the electric commercial vehicles segment, Tata Motors remained market leader by retailing 6,023 units up 40% YoY.

Electric Two-Wheelers crossed 14 lakh units (21.81%), with EV share rising to 6.5% and March’26 alone clocking a record 9.79% monthly share. 

In this segment, the top three players were TVS Motor up 44%, Bajaj Auto up 25% and Ather Energy up 82%. At number 4, Ola Electric de-grew over 52% YoY.

Electric Three-Wheelers at 8.30 lakh units grew 18.87% YoY cementing a dominant 60.9% segment share. Six in 10 Three-Wheelers sold during the financial year were electric.

Mahindra group remained the market leader in this segment by recording a growth of 46%. While Bajaj grew 76%, TVS fell 18% YoY.

“FY’26 has been a watershed year for India’s electric mobility story,” said C. S. Vigneshwar, President, FADA.

“This is not just an automobile industry achievement — it is a testament to India’s ability to lead a mass-market energy transition, from the last-mile auto-rickshaw to the family car. This shows that the structural momentum behind India’s EV journey remains firmly intact,” he said.
