China’s film administration said in a statement on Thursday (April 10, 2025) it would “moderately” decrease the number of U.S. films imported to the country, citing a reduced domestic appetite for U.S. films due to tariffs on China.

The U.S. first imposed 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports in February this year. A month later, the U.S. imposed additional 10% tariffs on all Chinese goods. On April 3, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced additional 34% duties on all Chinese imports.

On April 4, China announced retaliatory measures including more export controls on rare earth minerals. On April 9, China’s 84% levies on the U.S. take effect, and finally on Thursday, the U.S.’ tariff of 104% on China came into effect.
