Canadian leader Jagmeet Singh on Tuesday (April 29, 2025) announced that he would step down as leader of the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP) after he lost from his Burnaby Central seat in the country’s federal elections.
He said he would stay on in the interim until a new leader was elected.
The Mark Carney-led Liberal Party capped a narrow win in the elections, over the Conservative Party, but might still need the support of the NDP to secure a majority in Parliament.

Justin Trudeau’s Liberals had earlier relied on the New Democrats to remain in power for four years, but the progressive party faired poorly on Monday and its leader, Jagmeet Singh, said he was stepping down after eight years in charge.

In his concession speech, Mr. Singh thanked his supporters and his family and congratulated Mr. Carney on his victory. He said Mr. Carney had ‘an important job to do’ to protect Canada ‘from the threats of Donald Trump’.
Mr. Singh lost his seat in the House of Commons, one he’s held since 2019, coming in third. His seat of Burnaby Central in British Columbia was affected by redistribution ahead of this election. The NDP has also lost its official status, failing to secure the 12 seats necessary.

“It’s been the honour of my life to lead the NDP and to represent the people of Burnaby Central. Congratulations to Prime Minister Carney, and to all the other leaders on a hard-fought campaign. I know this night is disappointing for New Democrats. I am disappointed that we could not win more seats. But I am not disappointed in our movement. I am hopeful for our Party. I know that we will always choose hope over fear,” he said in a post on X after his loss.
Jagmeet Singh has been a vocal pro-Khalistan advocate and has frequently spoken on behalf of Khalistan activists in Canada.
