A lawmaker in Myanmar nominated junta chief Min Aung Hlaing as a candidate for Vice-President, a television broadcast on Monday (March 30, 2026) showed, paving the way for the coup leader to continue his rule in civilian garb.
“I nominate Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as vice-president,” MP Kyaw Kyaw Htay said, according to the live broadcast of the lower house session on state-run media.

Three Vice-Presidents will be chosen, one of whom will be elected as President.
Myanmar replaces junta leader as military chief
Myanmar installed a new military commander in chief on Monday (March 30), reports said, replacing junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, whose vice presidential nomination paved the way for him to become President.

Former spymaster Ye Win Oo was promoted to head the military at a ceremony in the capital Naypyidaw, several Myanmar media outlets reported.
